No-one knows where life is going to take them; if they did there would be no point in living.
Growing up I had one main passion. Basketball – did this mean upon leaving education I would become a professional Basketball player? No. I actually became a banker until I had a dream… After this I worked as a florist; this is where I realised my creative side as well as being great with my hands. At this point with two young children in toe I needed something that would provide for my family; a lunchtime session at an arcade nail stall inspired me to take evening classes in nail design. Finally I took the last step and decided to give up my day job and open my own nails salon.
This is when life started to go uphill, I opened a nail salon in the heart of South London, with its success a salon was opened nearer Central London, this salon was given the opportunity from the Local Government Authority to train underprivileged young people who had no qualifications, jobs or those who needed the pathway to their career; Nails! The students would attend the Salon several times a week and give willing customers free manicures; so the students could practise and build up their own portfolios. Lucky students were taken to London’s Fashion Week to do the manicures for the models. I oversaw all of the students and with the help of an external trainer gave back to the community and to the industry.
The Nails by Baptiste training school trained girls; who in a funny turn of events have now become my competitors working for companies such as Nails Inc and SAKS to name a couple.
So how exactly did I become a manicurist to the stars?? Well I was at London Fashion Week one year, working on many different shows for various high-status designers as well as working behind the scenes. Whilst working Gharani Strok’s show I was asked by a girl to do her nails, she was very persistent and kept asking me to do them with some of my designs. ‘Why not’ I thought; it turns out that woman was actually an agent who was part-owner of Premier Hair and Beauty who over the following four and a half years has helped me enter this glamorous world of high profile nail design!
Eventually the more glamorous contracts were rolling in. I signed a contract with the prestigious Sally Hansen to become their Ambassador where I also tested their products and for their press launches, I was their spokesperson. Around this time I also signed a contract with SAKS HAIR & BEAUTY in Covent Garden to franchise inside their salon and have a “Nails by Baptiste” manicurist working as part of the beauty team. NO 7 asked me to create nail polish colours for them which were later sold in all Boots stores. Boots also asked me to campaign for Cancer Research. I also took part in the Fashion Fights AIDS campaign along with other famous faces such as Mario Testino, Naomi Campbell and many more. I have also created several colours for Illamasqua as part of a Limited Edition range available in Selfridges. The list could go on and on with charity events, contracts and creations as my career is ever expanding.
My nail designs have graced the front covers of UK, American and European magazines with Vogue, Glamour, Instyle, Cosmopolitan and Vanity Fair, only to name but a few. From movie stars such as Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Freida Pinto, Keira Knightley, Kate Beckinsale, Kim Catrell and many more. Other Celebrities include Chaka Khan, Christina Aguilera, Victoria Beckham, Janet Jackson, Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue, Naomi Campbell, Sienna Miller and Madonna, again just to name a few. I’ve even tended to Cherie Blair’s nails, so I really have seen hands and feet from all walks of life.
It’s funny because my love of nail design (which I guess I never really noticed back then) started at a really young age, I’d spend AGES in the chemist looking at all the different nail varnish colours! Little did I know then, I’d be creating my own colours and treatments, or that I’d be working for Dior, Vivienne Westwood, YSL, Chanel and so many other amazing designers that sometimes I wonder if it’s all still a dream…This time it isn’t, it’s actually happening!
Where am I now? Well, I’ve been on GMTV and How To Look Good Naked recently so my face has been plastered all over TV – Who’d have thought? I’ve branched out and opened a new nail bar within the House of Fraser, where I have a fantastic team of girls working there. My nail designs are in books, one of my favourite designs being in “Beauty Shot” by Donna Troop, a fabulous beauty photographer. The list of celebrities is still ever updating and I’m always happy to take on new clients.
What’s next? Who knows, like I said earlier if we knew where life is going to take us then there would be in living. I’m always open to new business opportunities and I’m really looking forward to the future, what ever it holds. I really wish I had started this career sooner though, I feel like I’m rushing to fit it all in but then again – that’s all part of the fun!
